D’abord peintre et photographe engagé, Sami Al Karim est très vite interpelé par les relations internationales et les enjeux politico-économiques que l’expression artistique lui permet de décliner sous toutes ses formes. L’installation « Aurs Al Arab » représente la carte du monde arabe réalisée à partir d’un tapis, à ceci près que celui-ci apparaît inversé : l’Est y est représenté à la place de l’Ouest et vice versa. Symbole du monde arabe, ce tapis fait converger en son centre trois écrans vidéo projetant en boucle les images de la révolution égyptienne. Sur les deux écrans latéraux, des marionnettes s’emploient invariablement à nier la révolution, cédant momentanément la place à des messages prétendant qu’elle est sous tendue par un pouvoir religieux. Cette installation a inspiré une exposition éponyme regroupant d’autres artistes du monde arabe tels Hassan Hajjaj, Maziar Mokhtari, Larissa Sansour et Nawras Shalhoub. Comme pour inviter à identifier le foyer de la révolution, la curatrice Gaia Serena Simionati a ajouté le terme anglais « ours ? » à la suite du nom de l’œuvre de l’artiste irakien. Dès lors, « Aurs Al Arab (ours ?) » interroge sur le rapport entre l’effervescence politique du monde arabe et les évènements qui affectent actuellement l’économie mondiale. Expression arabe signifiant littéralement « fête de mariage des Arabes », l’artiste n’hésite pas à dresser un parallèle – pour le moins ironique – entre un « Aurs Al Arab », célébration retentissante et joyeuse et la situation sociopolitique du monde arabe. Si le mariage dans le monde arabe implique la mise en place d’un important cérémonial destiné à sceller l’union de deux êtres, le référent est ici synonyme d’union alors que le référé symbolise une menace pour l’unité. A la manière d’une fête de mariage où l’agitation prendrait le pas sur les festivités, la divergence d’informations que l’artiste met ici au service d’un jeu d’images puissant vient corroborer le tumulte sociopolitique qui secoue la région.

Initially a committed painter and photographer, Sami Al Karim was very quickly challenged by international relations and the politico-economic stakes that artistic expression enables him to explore in all its forms. The installation “Aurs Al Arab” represents the map of the Arab world made from a carpet, except that it appears reversed: the East is represented at the West and vice versa. A symbol of the Arab world, this carpet has three video screens converging in its center, showing the images of the Egyptian revolution in a continuous loop. Both side screens show puppets denying the revolution, temporarily giving way to messages claiming that the revolution was fostered by a religious power. This installation inspired an eponymous exhibition bringing together other artists from the Arab world such as Hassan Hajjaj, Maziar Mokhtari, Larissa Sansour and Nawras Shalhoub. As if to identify the seat of the revolution, curator Gaia Serena Simionati added the English word “ours? ” after the title of the work by the Iraqi artist. Consequently, “Aurs Al Arab (ours?) ” questions on the relationship between the political effervescence in the Arab World and events which currently affect the global economy. Using this Arabic expression literally meaning “marriage of the Arabs”, the artist does not hesitate to draw a very ironic parallel between an “Aurs Al Arab”, a resounding and merry celebration and the sociopolitical situation in the Arab World. While marriages in the Arab world go together with significant ceremonial intended to seal the union of two human beings, the referent symbolizes union here while the referee refers to a threat to unity. Just like a wedding where agitation would take over the celebration, the diverging information that serves here a powerful play of images corroborates the sociopolitical turmoil that shakes the region.
